"Seeing the Fields of Seeing"
On view May 14 - August 31, 2016
Art in this exhibition is drawn from three series of works. “Seeing the Fields of Seeing” explores visual perception and how we make meaning through ways of seeing. I position photography and painting as two unique notions of perception. Photography holds notions of reality being documented objectively, while painting is a subjective, personal, asserted expression of our world. My artwork pushes and explores the boundaries of these mediums and looks at the threshold where they meet. My process is to use film and create imagery in-camera through what art writer Sarah Pollman describes as a performative and gestural abstractive approach to photography. It is with an improvisational approach that I create imagery from the land and seascapes of the California coast. “Drawing with the Sun and Sea” and “Meta-Landscapes” are described by A. Will Brown of Daily Serving Contemporary Art as “exploring the metaphorical and conceptual capacities of landscape”. For me, making art is about how we experience our world and how art can create an experience for you the viewer. What boundaries, what notions affect how we see and think about the world? And what imagery can be made to ignite in us something deeper? Think, while looking out at the sky and ocean, that the horizon is an illusion and that the Sun never sets.
Art Sale will be until August 31, 2016!
